My Favourite Time
The play is set against the backdrop of the 2009 H1N1 influenza outbreak. The play opens as the swine flu rapidly spreads from Mexico City to the rest of the world, directly impacting the already strained global consumer market in the wake of the financial tsunami. On May 1st, Hong Kong confirms its first H1N1 case: a Mexican traveller who arrived via Shanghai. The government swiftly quarantines 300 travellers in a Wan Chai hotel for seven days, an unprecedented move, and raises the infectious disease alert to its highest level.
Amidst this chaos, two storylines unfold. A Hong Kong man returns from Shanghai, eager for a fresh start but instead faces the onset of this new millennium epidemic. Simultaneously, in Mong Kok's pedestrian zone, a young entrepreneurial woman with a suitcase prepares to compose a life-changing melody. The play combines narrative, reportage, monologue, commentary, documentary photography, video, physical theatre, and sound to explore new theatrical territories. It aims to showcase the peculiar landscape of the consumer age, blending factual events with fictional narratives to create a unique theatrical experience that reflects on the best and worst of times in our modern era.
