A German black comedy that satirises society's beauty standards and human vanity
German playwright Marius von Mayenburg's "The Ugly One" is a hit black comedy across Europe. Four actors continuously switch roles, with identities intermingling seamlessly before and after surgery, duplicating each other in a complex and bizarre web of relationships. The play challenges the audience's tolerance for beauty, dissecting the real and illusory components of "who I am."
Since its sold-out premiere at the Cattle Depot Theatre in 2013 and its acclaimed re-run in 2015, veteran director Weigo Lee has once again brought a fresh cast and innovative tactics to the stage.
