Masterclass by Christine Umpfenbach: Mapping my family

Christine Umpfenbach is a renowned director in contemporary German applied theater. Since the millennium, she has been actively creating works in Germany and other countries, focusing on the realities of urban life and themes such as immigration, labor, and memory. Her projects are based on intensive field research and interviews, often involving non-actors such as professionals from other fields, seniors, children, and refugees. She frequently creates site-specific performances, transforming parts of the city into stages rich with stories. Her works often weave elements of memory representation, audience participation, and experiential engagement.

This masterclass invites participants to propose a theatre project starting with a "family" or "household" story. Christine will draw upon her personal creative experience to delve into the concepts and practices of "Theatre of the Real". Through group discussions and one-on-one consultations, participants will analyse and develop their creative projects. The process culminates in a public presentation, showcasing the exploration results and serving as a starting point for participants' future projects.
